Spring 2026 - Accepting new clients
Hello, and welcome! I'm Carissa Visser (she/her). I provide individual therapy for adults (age 18+) who are seeking to get their mental health where they want it to be. If you are ready to see change in your life, I'd love to partner with you. I offer a free, 15-20 minute video-call consult to explore whether we'd be a good fit. Please reach out to get that scheduled. I look forward to meeting you!
Philosophy & Approach
I hold the perspective that the capacity to heal, grow, change, navigate challenges, and thrive is inherent in each of us. I partner with individuals to help bring forward and foster that capacity, with the ultimate aim of living a more joyful and fulfilled life.
I look at mental health symptomology from the perspective of - what life experiences caused this, rather than - what's wrong with you? In my experience, self-compassion and self-knowing/self-connection are essential for any positive, lasting shift in mental health. They are at the heart of the work I do with every client.
My work always starts with building an understanding of who you are and your story. This relational foundation forms safety and lays the groundwork for the two types of therapy that I specialize in - Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). With both of these therapies, my job is to act as a supportive guide. I will lead you through a process, creating conditions that will allow for transformation to occur within you.
My top priority is always providing a safe, non-judgmental, compassionate space where all parts of you and all experiences are welcome. All identities, ideologies and world views are truly welcome. It's an honor to walk with you on your path, and to support you in your journey, wherever it takes you.
IFS & EMDR
I am an IFS trained therapist, trained by the IFS Institute. IFS is an evidence-based, non-pathologizing model of psychotherapy. This model facilitates inner work with the parts of you that drive or hold the feelings, thoughts and behaviors that you’d like to see shift. IFS therapy creates change by allowing for impactful experiences of self-knowing, self-compassion, and self-healing. In addition to addressing mental health challenges, IFS therapy can also be used to address physical conditions such as chronic pain, headaches and digestive issues (e.g., acid reflux, IBS). If you’d like to learn about IFS therapy, the IFS Institute has an intro video on their Home page. The IFS Institute also has an article on IFS and chronic pain which you can find on their Resources page.
I am an also EMDR therapist, trained by the Personal Transformation Institute (PTI) which is an EMDRIA-approved training provider. EMDR is a comprehensive psychotherapy model which is also evidence-based and non-pathologizing. EMDR creates change by tapping into the body and mind’s intrinsic capacity for psychological self-healing. This model is most well-known for being highly successful in helping people with PTSD and Complex PTSD heal. It’s also perfectly suited to address a host of common mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression. PTI EMDR training is unique in that it’s a Somatic and Attachment Focused (SAFE) model – centered on compassion for the strategies we develop to ensure safety and/or connection. In addition to using the SAFE model, I interweave IFS practices into my EMDR work with clients.
